Gorge HCFA
Health Care for All – Columbia Gorge, nicknamed Gorge HCFA, is a growing group of individuals and businesses in the Columbia Gorge area advocating for universal health care at the state level in both Oregon and Washington. We are part of each state’s working coalition - Health Care for All – Oregon (HCAO) and Health Care for All – Washington (HCFA-WA) - and will assist locally in their organizing and legislative strategies.
Gorge HCFA is working with its partners to achieve health care that is
* available to every person in the state
* comprehensive
* secure
* affordable
* high quality
Our goal is to bring to residents and businesses of the Gorge an understanding of
* the current health care crisis,
* the moral and business need to ensure affordable health care for all, and
* how it can be done for the same money we’re already putting into health care,
and to lead the area’s participation in advancing legislation for universal health care in Oregon and Washington (each state individually).

Universal Health Care at the State Level
During our 2010 round of national health care reform, efforts to bring “single payer” to the table were rebuffed. The resulting reform legislation, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) is a compromise that brought/wil bring some significant improvements but failed to achieve the main reform objectives of affordability and covering all people.
As a result, the fight for universal health care has now moved to the state level. Approximately half of the fifty states now have universal health care advocacy groups and are at various stages of working toward legislation to finally provide health care for all state residents. Vermont was the first to achieve state legislative success, in Spring 2011. For an update of state initiatives, see PNHP’s online summary.
